When our outer world is darkest, we can see more clearly the light that moves subtly in, around and through us. As a gardener, I am becoming aware of different streams that nourish the seeds of light held deep in our hearts.
In a gathering at Christmas in 1923, philosopher Rudolf Steiner shared the Foundation Stone Meditation, a meditation that anchors the spiritual movement he initiated. He described five distinct forms of light: Spirit Light of the world (the Holy Spirit); Day Radiant Light (the light of consciousness); light that gives warmth to simple shepherd's hearts (love light), light that enlightens the side heads of Kings (light of wisdom) and Light Divine, the light of the Christ Being.
This morning, a friend shared that she had played, “Let There Be Light,” in her belly dance class last night. The Mickey Hart Band introduced this song in 2011. Robert Hunter wrote its lyrics. Mickey Hart is best known for his nearly five decades as an integral part of an expedition into the soul and spirit of music, disguised as the rock band The Grateful Dead, says hie website, www.mickeyhart.net. The song's words, performed by a famed rock and roller, answer Steiner's call from lofty heights.
Steiner acknowledges the interplay of the heights of spirit with the depths of existence. He calls us to found a new world in our hearts. Hunter's language evokes similar images.
Hunter: “Under the elm, Inside the night, That story began, Let there be light!”
Steiner: “The Spirit-light of the world entered...darkness of night had ceased its reign.”
Hunter: “Let there be reason, Let there be right, Let there be seasons, Let there be sight!”
Steiner: “ Day-radiant light shown forth in human souls..”
Hunter: “Let there be happiness, Let there be pain, Hearts to be broken, Let there be a dream.”
Steiner: “Light that gives warmth to simple shepherd's heart...”
Hunter: “Let there be violence; Fang and the claw. Let there be silence; Let there be law.”
Steiner: “Light that enlightens the wise heads of kings.”
Hunter: “Let there be sunset, And let there be dawn; Let there be moonbeams, To shine upon.”
Steiner: “Light divine, Christ-Sun, you live within the beat of heart and lung, for the Christ-will encircling us holds sway in world rhythms, bestowing grace upon our souls.””
Let there be the light of truth!
Let there be the light of love!
Let there be the light of wisdom!
Let there be the light of life!
Let there be the light of soul unfolding!
A friend recently wrote, “As we prepare for the long deep night, we know that "the seed of light awakens and begins its return.” How will you nourish this seed? What streams of light will you enter? My friend also shared these words from Rainbow Warrior Awaken! by Mara Berendt Friedman and Trinity Harris.)”What part of yourself and your story must you surrender in order to begin to live a new story? With this release, the circle of life continues to unfold."
May we live within the circle and may we embody light!
